Air Jordans Cake For Vashtie Kola’s Birthday

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009 by admin

We were contacted by a PR agent who came asking for a cake for his client. We of course wondered, who could it be? It turned out to be for Vashtie Kola’s birthday party extravaganza to be held at the Santos nightclub in Manhattan. I was floored because I knew her as the Downtown’s Sweetheart, video music director/New York City fashion icon. Her agent walked in with an Air Jordan sneaker and asked us to recreate it in cake. Check out how it came out:

Yoda Cake

Check out our latest Star Wars cake! It’s Yoda! A lady from the City contacted us about a birthday cake for her son and I guess he was a big fan of Yoda and Star Wars. When we dropped off the cake, we found that the birthday was being held at a school, and we were greeted by a Stormtrooper who directed the way. It turned out that all the kids were dressed up as Star Wars characters…how cool!

Last Cake Standing: Elopement

Sunday, April 12th, 2009 by admin

So are we the only ones loving the new Food Network show “Challenge: Last Cake Standing”?? It’s great! The show is almost identical to the traditional FoodTV Challenge format, except that it melds it with the reality show format–complete with the ability to vote one another off–as in last week’s episode. The series started out with Elisa Strauss, Bronwen Weber, Mary Maher, Courtney something (can’t remember her last name–that’s terrible especially since 1. I should know it and 2. I could easily google it), James Roselle, and Michelle Bommarito–all great cake artists…and Food Network Challenge veterans. Jealous? Of course not! Oh…and by the way, definitely spoiler alert if you haven’t already seen the latest episode but intend to.

Wow…I was definitely yelling at the TV…”Mary no! Bad idea to get out of the limo so early!”. The cake artists were put in a limo to find out what the bride and groom wanted as their wedding cake–for THAT evening–and the cake artists decided when they felt they had enough info. The way I saw it, staying in the limo an extra ten minutes or whatever is not gonna just kill your schedule, so at least find out what the client wants before you leave! And at the end, I guess I was right because Elissa Strauss, who jumped out of the limo second, ended up being eliminated (albeit partially for not meeting the height-requirement–don’t get me started about the height-requirement–sheesh).

I’ve gotta say…I was definitely bummed to see Elisa go… she does some incredible work and comes off incredibly sweet. But then again…Bronwen is great too! So how do you choose? Well…I guess basically the way to choose is: if you don’t perform well today, you can easily be gone by the end of it.

Great show…can’t wait for next week’s…

Sports-Themed Cakes

OK, so we haven’t posted much in the last couple months…but it’s been really busy…I’m sorry! Anyway, we thought we’d get back on track with a montage of cakes, all with sports as the center-theme, especially since baseball season is back. These are great ideas for birthday cakes…boys and girls alike. Now of course, you might be muttering to yourself as you look below at all the New York franchises…but hey…we’re in New York after all! And that said, we do get many cakes for teams all around the country…so don’t worry. And we thought we’d mix up the sports a bit too, so we even have some golf and snowboarding. Enjoy!

Lamborghini Vegas Cake

So this woman contacted us looking for a cake for her boyfriend. She booked a trip to Las Vegas for his birthday…and even rented him a Lamborghini–all of this a surprise! So what could she give him as a birthday cake? Why a Lamborghini made out of cake in front of the Las Vegas Marquis sign of course.
