Napoleon Bonaparte Cake Revisited

Every so often I like to clear out the camera’s storage card so that we can continue taking pictures of our specialty cakes issue-free. As I was doing that, I’m thinking to myself, we have some great shots of the Napoleon cake–in particular, shots of us putting the surprise birthday cake together. Here’s a shot of Mr. Bonaparte with his face perhaps 50% finished…beside the final cake.

This is another cake I just don’t know how you could cut! The client contacted us about designing a cake for her husband’s surprise 60th birthday cake. He was into collecting Civil War and French Revolution period figures. After some planning, we decided on a bust of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Bulldog and Soccer Ball Platter Cake

This client has an amazing sense of humor. Yes, the cake is basically a scene of their beloved bulldog with a ball in his mouth–something he loves to chew on constantly. But they added a twist–the dog is sitting on a platter with what looks like an apple in his mouth!

Here’s another 3D car cake. We get a lot of them, but there was something about how this cake came out. This groom’s cake came out quite close to perfectly. In fact, someone in the shop commented, I work here and I wasn’t even sure if that was cake.

Fifa World Cup Trophy Cake

With all the hysteria around the World Cup, and the finals being tonight, I thought it’d be a good idea to showcase a couple Fifa Trophy Cakes we’ve done. In fact, we did two trophies, and both happened to be in the same week! Take a look–obviously we took two slightly different approaches to the cake:

Here’s a shot of them in our walk-in (with other cakes for that week). One was vanilla cake with chocolate buttercream and the other dense chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream.

One was delivered to Bronx, NY and the other to Chelsea Piers, New York City.

Yoda Cake

Check out our latest Star Wars cake! It’s Yoda! A lady from the City contacted us about a birthday cake for her son and I guess he was a big fan of Yoda and Star Wars. When we dropped off the cake, we found that the birthday was being held at a school, and we were greeted by a Stormtrooper who directed the way. It turned out that all the kids were dressed up as Star Wars characters…how cool!

Sports-Themed Cakes

OK, so we haven’t posted much in the last couple months…but it’s been really busy…I’m sorry! Anyway, we thought we’d get back on track with a montage of cakes, all with sports as the center-theme, especially since baseball season is back. These are great ideas for birthday cakes…boys and girls alike. Now of course, you might be muttering to yourself as you look below at all the New York franchises…but hey…we’re in New York after all! And that said, we do get many cakes for teams all around the country…so don’t worry. And we thought we’d mix up the sports a bit too, so we even have some golf and snowboarding. Enjoy!

Lamborghini Vegas Cake

So this woman contacted us looking for a cake for her boyfriend. She booked a trip to Las Vegas for his birthday…and even rented him a Lamborghini–all of this a surprise! So what could she give him as a birthday cake? Why a Lamborghini made out of cake in front of the Las Vegas Marquis sign of course.

The Batman’s Tumbler Cake

We received a request for a Batmobile cake and were thrilled to learn that the client wanted a cake of the latest one–the Tumbler.

That was, until we got a closer look at what exactly the Tumbler looks like! Of course we love a challenge, and we realized this was not going to be an ordinary car cake. We settled on a design that incorporated both fondant and gum-paste to recreate the numerous panels of armor. We also decided that since this was a birthday cake for a five-year old, we would wrap the car in yellow/orange windows. An all black cake comes out pretty boring anyway, and a lot of the detail tends to disappear.

So how did we do?? We sure love the result!

We took some action shots of the work. The first image below shows how we started–with essentially sheet cakes that are eventually carved into the shape that’s needed, as you can see in the second image. The third image shows how we cover the final shape with fondant. There was a lot more work involved, of course!

Happy Cakegiving??

Boy this was a busy Thanksgiving weekend for cakes! Cakes due in the middle of the week is never easy, and when you get a number of them due that way, it definitely challenges the staff. There’s no time to recuperate from the previous weekend, and you know you still have to be on time for the cakes due the upcoming weekend as well!

This time is was no different, except there were three cakes due in the middle of the week, and not exactly the easiest ones possible. Below was a surprise birthday cake for an individual that owned a trucking company. What’s more fitting than a cake of their newest purchase – a tractor trailer! We definitely wanted the cake to give that heavy feel of a tractor trailor to the viewer, with the big wheels and monstrous–everything. Proportions were critical. Not only that, 18-wheelers with the trailor behind make for really long and narrow cakes. An 18-inch long cake would mean the cab width would be just 2-inches; exactly the behemoth we wanted the cake to come off. We ended up going with a length of around 3 feet.

The next cake was also due on Thanksgiving. The customer wanted to present a bouquet of flowers to her mom at the family dinner that night. Why not make it out of cake?? (Note: this was the second basket of sugar flowers in a month!)

Sigh…now to finish the cakes due this weekend!
